I joined teaching around 7 years ago having spend the first half of my working like as a software developer. In some ways I was ready for a change but in others I was taking up the challenge laid down when the computing curriculum changed in 2014 with a greater emphasis on coding in schools.
When I entered the teaching training I was surprised at how little specific computing pedagogy was taught. We had the standard behaviour management, differentiation and SEND awareness training, but very little on how to teach specific aspects of computing.
As I entered my teaching profession, the one thing I have always struggled with is in teaching coding. Perhaps my deep subject knowledge and instinct on how to solve coding problems quickly and easily is my Achilles heel but equally a brief search online sees very little on how to instruct classes of students to effectively master coding.
To this end I am about to embark on a Masters in Educational Leadership with a view to developing a pedagogy in coding and coding instruction. It is my goal to provide a working set of pedagogical methods beyond the many resources that are currently available. These methods will be backed up by educational evidence and research and also from trialling them in my classroom. I have many ideas. Which will turn out to be the most effective?
